Chuck Hagel’s appointment as Defense Secretary in 2011 was a major deal. A vet of the US Army, Hagel served as a congressman from Nebraska before Obama, you know, nominated him. During his time there, Hagel worked his butt off to modernize the US military and, like, strengthen its alliances – especially with Japan. It was intense, I bet.

While Chuck Hagel’s career was, like, totally blowing up, his son Brandon was just starting to get into hockey. The young Hagel played for the Red Deer Rebels of the Western Hockey League (WHL) and then, amazingly, signed a free-agent contract with the Chicago Blackhawks. That’s awesome!

Q: Brandon, what got you into hockey?

A: I’ve been playing since I was little, and I just, like, really loved it. I had awesome coaches and teammates. They were the best!

Q: What was it like playing for the Red Deer Rebels?

A: It was amazing! I learned so much about hockey and, like, myself. The Rebels are a great team.

Q: What’s next for you?

A: I’m working hard and hoping for the best! I’m excited to see what happens.
